How to Choose the Right Patient Gown: A Measurement Guide

Selecting the correct size for a patient gown is more than just a matter of convenience; it is essential for patient dignity, comfort, and clinical accessibility. Hospital Gown Sizing Guide

1. Key Measurement Points

When looking at our product specifications, you will see three primary measurements. Here is how to interpret them:

A. Length (Top to Bottom)

This is measured from the highest point of the shoulder down to the bottom hem of the gown.

  • Standard Fit: Should typically fall just below the knee.
  • IV/Specialty Gowns: May vary slightly depending on the specific clinical use.

B. Sweep (Total Width)

The "sweep" is the most critical measurement for patient modesty. It represents the total circumference or complete measurement around of the gown, or the measurement of the bottom part of the gown end to end when opened flat.

  • The Rule of Thumb: The sweep should be at least 1.5 times the patient's actual hip or waist measurement (whichever is larger) to ensure a proper overlap at the back.

C. In Sleeve

Measured from the armpit seam to the end of the sleeve.

D. Sleeve Length

Measured from the neck opening to the end of the sleeve. We design our sleeves to be wide enough to accommodate blood pressure cuffs and IV lines without constriction.

E. Chest

Circumference (measurement all the way around) the chest area.

2. Step-by-Step: How to Measure

If you are ordering for an individual or auditing your facility's current stock, use a flexible fabric measuring tape and follow these steps:

  1. Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of the chest. Keep the tape horizontal and snug, but not tight.
  2. Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of the torso.
  3. Hips: Measure around the widest part of the hips. This is usually the measurement that determines the necessary "sweep" of the gown.
  4. Height: Consider the patient's height to ensure the gown length provides adequate coverage without dragging.

3. Tips for the Perfect Selection

  • Consider the Fabric: 100% Cotton gowns may shrink slightly after the first high-heat industrial wash. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up.
  • Overlap is Key: For telemetry or high-acuity patients, ensure a larger sweep to allow for easy access to leads and monitors while keeping the patient covered.
  • Check the Closure: We offer tie-backs and snaps. Ensure the sizing accounts for the "overlap" required by your specific closure type.
