The Details
The thing worth understanding about a dobby border is that it is structural. A dobby is a loom mechanism that controls individual warp threads, letting the mill weave a pattern directly into the cloth as it is made. The design is not printed onto the surface or sewn on as a separate band. It is part of the fabric itself, which means it cannot fade, peel, crack, or wash away, no matter how many commercial cycles the towel goes through. A printed border is a decoration with an expiry date. A woven one lasts as long as the towel does.
The piano design works entirely in relief. Raised ribs of varying width run in sequence across the end of the towel, and because the whole thing is white on white, the pattern shows through shadow and the way light falls across it rather than through contrast. You notice it folded on a shelf and you feel it in the hand, but it never fights the room the way a colored stripe would.
Underneath, this is the same ring-spun cotton construction that anchors the middle of the Oxford range: fibers drawn and twisted into a compact, uniform yarn that resists the abrasion of frequent laundering and keeps a smooth surface longer than open-end yarn does.
