The Details
The yarn spec reads "10 single," and each half of it explains part of the price. The 10 is the yarn count, where a smaller number means a heavier strand, so a 10s gives the towel real body for an entry-level product. "Single" means single-ply. One spun strand goes straight into the loom, instead of two strands being twisted together first as in a plied yarn. Plying adds strength and mass to every loop, but it also adds a production step and cost. Skipping it keeps this towel at the low end of the range, while the heavy count keeps it from feeling flimsy.
Open-end spinning is the other half. The cotton is spun in a high-speed rotor rather than drawn out on a ring frame, which turns out yarn quickly and cheaply. The trade is a yarn that is weaker and coarser in the hand than ring-spun. For towels that get washed hard, replaced on a schedule, or put to work on spills and surfaces, that is usually the right place to save.
The supplier states that thickness and weave can vary between batches. If towels need to match across a linen closet or a set of rooms, ordering the full quantity at once is the simplest way to keep a commercial stock consistent.
